A googolplex is not just a larger googol

A googol is 10^100: one followed by 100 zeros. A googolplex takes that same googol and uses it as an exponent: 10^(10^100). The result is a 1 followed by 10^100 zeros. This is an example of how exponentiation changes scale far more quickly than adding or multiplying ordinary large numbers.

Why you cannot write it out

A googolplex is finite, so in principle it has a full decimal expansion. In practice, no realistic physical storage could hold all its digits. The point of the number is not that people need to count it; it is a clean demonstration that mathematics can define exact quantities far beyond anything that can be displayed, measured, or stored in the physical world.
